Recover an administrator

Administrator recovery is switched off on this server. It is off by default: a standing recovery code on a console that does not need one is a credential nobody is watching.

How to switch it on

Recovery needs somebody who can reach the machine this server runs on. That is deliberate: it is the same authority as switching the appliance off, and it is what stands in place of the password nobody can remember.

  1. On the server, set VisionXCam:AdminRecovery:Enabled to true — in appsettings.json, or as the environment variable VisionXCam__AdminRecovery__Enabled=true.
  2. Restart the server.
  3. Read its log. It prints a recovery code in a block of = signs, once, at startup.
  4. Come back to this page and type the code with the administrator's username.
  5. Set the setting back to false and restart, so no code is printed again.

The code works once. Using it, or restarting the server, ends it — nothing writes it to disk, so there is no standing key left behind afterwards.
